Man Refuses to Pay URA Fine

A 23 year old, who drives a
Mercedes-Benz SLK convertible, is challenging URA's decision to issue him with a fine of SGD30 for illegal parking along Circular Road. His excuse? That others were illegally parked, but not fined. Read about how he threatened URA in his letter with 'going public'.

"Respond to me within three days or
"I will proceed to make the matter open to the public"."

It is not clear whether there were 'other illegally-parked cars' near his on that street at the same time, or that he's merely making this up.

Regardless, there is one thing for sure, i.e. the summon-issuing officer (These days, URA outsources this function. Those 'umbrella-aunties/ uncles/ brothers/ sisters you see on the road are no longer URA officers.) is of the view that the Merz was illegally-parked AND the driver has admitted that he had illegally parked.

"I don't think they will bother taking me to court over $30.
It's a waste of time for them."

I say if the 23 year old wanna play punk with URA, then whack him hard for being defiant PLUS wasting public service resources. Of course, do make sure that the process is transparent and public.

As for the 23 year old's claim that his expensive car has been picked on, take it as public feedback and include it in the spot-check list. The authorities can invite members of public to witness and take part in the spot-checks. Get bloggers/twitters/online vids to talk about the spot-checks. "A day with the Carpark 'Pontianaks'" as people like to rudely call and/or shout to them. If pitched well, it'll be a great experience for the 'witness' and the audience.

TADAH! Everyone's happy...
Except for the 23 year old... of course... But he has youth, energy (angst) and money on his side... He'll survive.
