I didn't know that the Speak Mandarin Campaign has been going on for 31 years?!
We all know that there is a Speak Mandarin Campaign, but are hardly influenced by it. If anything, most people would shut out any messages/ information coming from these campaign ads.
31 years is a mighty long time. I wonder if the organising body and its parent ministry have been measuring whether such efforts have been marginally useful.
I think the organisers should try something different henceforth. They should use the main English platforms, i.e. Straits Times, Channel 5 etc to put up a "Chinese Character/ Phrase/ Sentence of the Day". This could make reference to the context at that point in time, e.g. a headline, a season greeting etc.
The point is for the Chinese phrase to be of relevance (useful in everyday life) and accessible.
So perhaps we can start with today's:
好无聊!
hao3 wu2 liao2
